FrontPage extensions and FTP

Hi,

I've read from several sources that using regular FTP clients on a
server that uses Frontpage extensions is the best way to screw up the
server or at least the pages.

But still I would really much like to log in to our server with FTP.
What is needed to screw up the extensions, is it ok if I only log in to
the server via FTP and create a whole new folder and leave the ones
using the extensions untouched?

Thanks

Aapo

Yes will usually screw up extensions.

FTP to a subweb/subsite if your host allows for the creation of
subwebs/subsites...and then never Publish via http method to the
subsite/subweb.

I've done this without any problem. In one case it to allow a webcam to FTP
to the site in question.

Logging on to a FrontPage extended web via ftp won't hurt anything BUT when
you start publishing things to the server via ftp then you are asking for
trouble. At least that is how my host has instructed me. I have to ftp in to
download my daily log files because they are not visable in FrontPage when I
view the server copy. This is on a Windows 2003 server. I don't know if it
is just how the web host has the server configured or if it has something to
do with the OS. On another web site that I manage that has Windows 2000 I am
able to see the log folder and files in FrontPage.

If your host support subwebs, create the folder in your root web in FP and convert it to a subweb in FP in the online site (right
click and covert to web)
- then you can FTP to that folder and just don't open the subweb in FP
