Frontpage cannot to ftp server, but why? (IE can)

Can anyone help me please.

Using Frontpage - when I try to publish my site via ftp, I get the message
"cannot connect to ftp server..." & if click for more help - a message saying
the problem may be because of proxy or fire wall setting.

Yet if I use IE, I can connect to the site, and I have therefore used this
method to publish the site, but I now need to synch (rather than waste time
copying all the files).

In both FP and IE I click on a saved "My Netwok places" to get to the site.

Could the issue by that I have copied (local) _vti_cnf files to the server -
in which case how do I correct them?

Perhaps you have allowed IE, or it was allowed by default past some kind of
"antivirus" like Norton, but you've got to add FrontPage manually.
Can you http:// publish out using FrontPage or is this just and FTP Problem?

If you make web sites for other people, you should check out ContentSeed:

You do not "copy" _vti_cnf files to the server from your local machine.
That could cause serious problems. Those files are generated on the remote
server by the FP server extensions that are installed on the server. When
using extensions, you do not FTP, you http publish.

Thanks Tom,
But I may have inadvertently copied these files when I 'dragged&dropped'
in IE from my local drive to the server.
You say this could cause 'serious problems'. How can I find out if I
did copy them - and could this be the cause of FP not being able to ftp
publish to the site?

Hi Chris, tx 4 fast response.

Im on win2000 and run Zone Alarm as firewall. This ask, the 1st time a
program tries to connect, whether you want to allow it to. Strangly it
didn't ask about FP*. However, on your suggestion I have added FP to the
allowed-list (just like IE), but no change. Still get - cant connect message
* which makes me wonder whether FP even tried to connect, since the error
message comes back very fast! Where are the id/passw kept? It doesnt ask
me for them?

Did you give FP FTP access on port 21 in Zone Alarm??

I don't know where/how to allow ports in ZA, so I added the site to my
'trusted zone'. Still couldn't connect, so I stopped ZA & Norton
Anti-virus completely *. Still can't connect! (* I restarted again v
quickly ;-).

SOLVED.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions, but I found the answer serendipitously.

Instead of selecting the site via 'My Network Places' I typed the full
address including id & password viz...
ftp://userid:p[email protected].

It accessed the site without problem.
