Frontpage 2003 Installer Keeps Running

G

Guest

I have recently upgraded my computer from W2k Professional to WinXP
Professional.
Every time I run Frontpage 2003 it runs the Installer for a few seconds then
goes into Frontpage.

This is the only office product that does this. Excel, Word, and Access are
all running fine. I have already searched the knowledge base with no luck
regarding this problem. Any suggestions on where to look would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

Roy

Try running Detect and Repair from the Help dropdown in FrontPage.

Hi Steve and thanks for the reply.
I tried your suggestion and the problem still exists. Upon starting
Frontpage 2003 I get the Windows Installer, followed by a message that says:
"Installing Microsoft Office Frontpage Feature"

If I knew what feature was being installed, I might know where to look, but
there's no other indication given. I have even removed FP2003 completely,
rebooted and reinstalled, with the same effect.

try downloading the latest MS installer here -
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/wininstallnt.html - or go to the MS
site if you don't feel safe with that link.

and also, make sure you have all the updates from the MS office site here
following:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx

On a side note, personally, I never like to 'upgrade' - it mostly always, in
my experience, seems to cost a little bit more in time than it does paying
for the full program and then doing a clean install. I find the latter
method to always be cheaper.

good luck.

Michael,

By Installer, I assume you're referring to the Microsoft Installer.
When I did the Windows Update online the latest installer was installed,
which was 3.1 I believe.

In any event, the problem doesn't appear to be with the Installer, but
rather with Frontpage itself. The installer works just fine with ALL other
applications which have been installed - and it IS current.

My suspicion at this point is that the problem is related to a previous
installation of Adobe (full version) v5, which I can't find the CD's for to
put it back.

I agree that a full install is always better, but I didn't want to lose any
of the data on the drive. Actually everything is up and running except for
FrontPage, which will run except for the few seconds of the installer at the
initial execution.

Thanks everyone for the effort. I finally contacted Microsoft support this
evening and after over an hour with a very nice tech support person, and a
complete removal of not only Frontpage but some registry entries as well AND
deleting some folder, as well as cleaning out the TEMP folder, the software
was reinstalled as a full install and it's now working fine.

I consider this issue closed. Perhaps the above will help someone else who
may have a similar problem.

I had this very same problem the other day after adding FrontPage 2003
to an already existing Office 2003 that had been installed and running
without any problems for a while. In my case it turned out to be a
rather simple fix (although it was difficult to isolate the problem) so
i thought i'd share the knowledge in case it helps others in the
future.

In my case I installed as the administrator, but i login to do my
day-to-day stuff as a normal user with limited permissions. My admin
user can run FP2003 without any problems, but the normal user account
cannot. However if i added the normal account to the administrators
group then FrontPage ran fine (i.e no installer dialogs at startup), so
this immediately pointed to a permissions problem somewhere.

I managed to determine that it was a problem with permission on this
registry key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (which actually maps to the keys under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes). Somehow the permissions on that
key had got messed up and it was affecting any sub-keys that were set
to inherit permissions. Once i reset the permissions to what they
should be, then FrontPage ran perfectly. -- problem solved.

For the record, i believe the permissions on that key should be as
follows:
Administrators - Full Control
System - Full Control
Users - Read
Creator Owner - Special (Full Control - subkeys only)
Power Users - Special (Query Value, Set Value, Create Subkey, Enum
Subkey, Delete, Read Control)

I hope this helps
