FrontPage 2000 : Errors creating Web Files on a network share

M

Mike

Hi,

I have Windows 98SE Clients installed with FrontPage 2000
(Service Pack 3) and users can create, edit etc Web Files
OK if they are located on the local C Drive, but the
folling error occurs when trying to do the same on a
Mapped Network Drive (Which is based on a Windows 2000
SP4 Server).

"An unexpected error occurred while accessing your
FrontPage Web files.Authors - If authoring against a web
server please contact the webmasterfor this server's
site. WebMasters please see the server's system log for
more details."

I have searched Technet, Newsgroups etc but with no
success. I still don't know if i have to install PWS /
Frontpage Extension on the server etc. I don't want to
publish them. The users basically want to store their
created web sites on their own user area via a mapped
network drive. A Microsoft document i located does
specifically mention that web files can be stored locally
and/or on a network share, "in addition" to being
published onto a Web Server.

All i want to do is to allow users to create and work on
their web files on a network share and not on the C
Drive!!

If anyone can help, it would be very much appreciated.

Thank You.

The norm is to have FrontPage create a site through a web server. It sounds
like you are trying to have a disk based access for a web site. This is why
it is bombing.

The best bet is to set up the FP people as authors of the site. You can
still restrict certain directories using Windows security, if necessary.
But, trying to give directory access for a website and having FrontPage
control as a disk based web is a mistake.

Hope this helps.

Some further updates for you..

The problem happens when trying to create etc FrontPage
Webs and store them on network shares (mapped drives)
which are on Windows NT4 Server and/or Windows 2000
Server.

This is the default location(s) for the user's personal
folder.

As a test, i created new shares (drive mappings) which
were based on a Windows 98SE based computer, and
Frontpage happily works....

This to me now sounds like a permissions problem, but
even myself who has full access to the shares, and
indeed to the whole Domain, keep receiving the errors in
FrontPage when saving to a share located on a NT4 and/or
W2k Server (both are NTFS formatted)

Its seems crazy that to solve the problem i will have to
build a windows 98Se based file server!!!!

Any more help would be very much appreciated.
