Frontpage 03 links editing

J

Jay

Hi everyone !

This is my first time here. I hope somebody will help me with the
following problems.

I currently use Frontpage 2003 to edit my webpages. All of my webpages
have 2 things in common.

1) a header that contains all the quicklinks of the site (text)
2) a left-side bar that contains additional links.

In the future, those links that are either in the the header or the
left-side bar might be changed (the url), but I don't want to make
changes in every pages. I don't want to try the dynamic page approach
where I would include a "header" and "left-side-bar" in all pages
(either using php or asp or other scripting languages). My questions
is:

Is there a way in Front page 03 that allows me to change the link (url)
in all pages by just editing the link only one time ? (instead of going
in every page and make the changes)

Any help would be greatly appreciated !

Thank you so much,

Jay Hana

Either use
Shared borders, nav view, and nav bars (edit the nav view to change your links)
Or for more control of content create an include page and include it on all pages (as your left nav)
Or if using FP 2003 look at Dynamic Web templates (a DWT applied to all pages)

There are three options:
1) Use a Dynamic web template - this will layout the page and include any
boiler plate text (such as navigation) and can be attached to pages containg
content. Changing the non-editable regions in the DWT will change the
corresponding areas in attached pages.

2) Use FrontPage include pages. As with DWT, any changes in an include will
be relected in the pages using that include. (search Including on page in
another in FP help).

3) Shared Borders (not recommended) These are specialised include pages
that are restricted in positioning on the page, and carry other overhead
that, IMO, can be avoided using methods 1 and 2.

All these are descibed in Front Page help..

They're restrictive imo.

Shared Borders have to be "switched on" in FP2003 - a hint that they are ,
and my complete post explains why _I_ do not recommend them when better
methods (DWT and include files) are available.

Thanks to everybody for your input, but I have another problem using
"front page include".

below is tutorial link that I found on microsoft website about
frontpage include:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP011544741033.aspx

I followed the tutorial and created the medata to my website. Then, I
chose "Page" include option under "Choose a type of content".

In Frontpage window, I can see the included file being display
properly. However, when I viewed the page under IE6 or Firefox, I
didn't see the page that were included.

Does anybody know what my problem is ?

PS: I store my web folder under my apache's "htdocs" folder. Could this
be a problem ?

Thank you,

Jay

No, but can you give a URL to the page that is to be included and the page it should currently be
included in?

Hi!

Thank you for your response !
No, but can you give a URL to the page that is to be included and the page it should currently be
included in?

I tested my web pages under apache server which is installed in my
computer.

I think I will go with Dynamic Web Template instead.

Thanks,

Jay
