Tried the advice in the previous message/response but didn't find any of the
files.

Hi.

Yeldar,
Although I can't offer you any help, I too am experiencing the same crash.
I am running FP2000, with XPSP2 Home edition, and all was working well.
About a week ago, it crashed when opening and nothing that I have tried has
worked. What version of windows you using? Are all of the service packs
installed, and are all security updates installed. There must be something
that we did that is causing this.
See my post in microsoft.public.frontpage.addins

With FP closed, search for and delete CmdPrfUI

Thomas,

Thanks for that, but I didn't find the file that you indicated. Is that a
registry key or value?

Doug

Thomas,

Did you mean "cmdui.prf"? If so I have found and deleted that file with no
success in getting FP to start up

Doug

Yes, you found the correct file, sorry about that.

Since that didn't solve the problem, I am not sure where else to look.

So what do we do??????????????????????

Call MS Product Support.

I have never had a problem with running any version of FP under Windows 98 (FP98, FP2000), XP Home
or XP Pro with or without SP1, SP1a or SP2 (FP98, FP2000, FP2002, FP2003) I do however work against
a local Windows 2003 Standard IIS server and no disk based webs.

one further thought...make sure you haven't used any programs that are memory hogs previous to opening FP...like Acrobat, Photoshop, etc. I always have problems with these programs (and a few others) not releasing memory after closing them down. I have to reboot after using them then everythings ok.

The file is normally located in the hidden, system folder:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FrontPage\State

Paste the above into the Windows Explorer address bar.

Rob,

Good advice in any case. I this particlar case, I have been rebooting after
trying each fix, with no success.

Anybody else have a similar problem?

So far the list is:
John Huston FP2003 XPSP2
Doug Norton FP2000 XPSP2
Yeldar ??? ???

From the very limited data, it seems that there may be a problem with XP.

Regards
Doug

That only 3 people out of 1000s that use FP and Windows XP SP2 dealing with FP crashing.

I have FP2000, FP2002 and FP2003 all installed and running under Windows XP SP2 (Pro), now I did do
a clean install of Windows XP Pro, then installed SP1, then SP1a, and finally SP2, plus all updates
in between the different SPs.

Thomas,

Yes only 3 reporting it now, and all within a few days of each other. Non
of us experienced a similar problem in the past and two of us have different
versions of FrontPage, but the same operating system. I admit that these
are very slim statistics, but there never the lest is a common thread.
Hopefully there will be a common fix.

Regards

Doug

Ok,

Was FP installed prior to install SP2?

Was the current install of Windows XP a clean install or an Upgrade from Windows 98 / ME before
install SP2?

Where all of the other Service Packs for Windows XP installed prior to SP2?

I have been using FrontPage 2002 on XP Pro SP1 for nearly 2 years with no
problems for the first year and a half. Last fall I began experiencing the
same problem with crashing . I tried many fixes. I installed XP1a and
encountered problems due to spyware and adware on my computer. After
removing the problem causing software, I had the same problem with
FrontPage. I have recently installed XP2 after being told that that would
solve the problem. It seems to exacerbated it. Now FrontPage crashes as soon
as I open a file. Sometimes it allows me to do some work on a web in
progress, but shuts down when saving, importing, applying a theme, etc.
Sometimes I get an error message saying that the program has encountered a
problem and must shut down. The last time I received an error message, the
error signature was: App: FrontPage.exe Mod version:10.0.6308.0 App
version: 10.0.6308.0 Offset: 00003806 Modname: fp5awec.dll. I have
tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, but nothing helps.

This copy had been used on previously on 98 and 2000. The install on XP was
clean. It came on my new notebook, a Toshiba A70. The first thing that I
did was to install Office 2000 premier. Then the operating system was
patched, then MS Office was patched. Both are at the latest levels of
patches.
All patches were installed in the order determined by the update utility.

Thanks for this add to the post. As I said earlier on, I think this is
related to XP. Stay tuned.

Doug

The best solution is then is to call MS Product Support. The more folks that call with this issue,
the more likely the issue will be resolved in a shorter time period, as this is a peer-to-peer
newsgroup.

Thomas,

Is there a way to call MS Product Support without being charged $35.00? The
only numbers I can find have this charge.
Thanks,
S.C.

It is turns out to be a bug, you will not be charged.
