From XP Home to XP Professional

I want to install XP Professional over the currently pre-
installed XP Home OEM edition on my Sony Vaio laptop.

What will happen to other applications and softwares that
came with OEM pre-installation? Will they continue to work
as it is OR they will get removed?

E.g., DVD writer software and memory stick formatter, that
came pre-installed on Sony Vaio, WILL they work after
installtion of XP professional or they stop working.

PS: I do not plan to upgrade, but plan to install retail
XP Professional.

If you wish to preserve your current applications, you must
select the default "Upgrade" setup option. The "New Installation"
setup option is to be selected only if you wish to install Windows
XP Professional on an available empty drive or partition. If you
attempt to force a "New Installation", you'll likely end up with
many conflicts and also lose all existing programs.

Make sure to disable or uninstall your antivirus program
before upgrading to Windows XP Professional.

I'm very interested in what you learn about upgrading your
VAIO. I'm currently trying to upgrade my VAIO (PCG-GRX670)
from XP Home SP2 to XP Pro and I'm getting an error saying
that setup cannot continue because my computer has a newer
OS than what is on the CD. I just posted my question
before I saw your post.

I have a vaio pcg-nv170 and am having a terrible time trying to upgrade, i
can't get a clean install, it wants to install xp pro in addition to xp
home....about to throw my comp out the window

seems I need to find a place that stocks xp pro with sp2 built-in? who has

You can either make your own (Google for "slipstream SP2 into Windows XP")
or uninstall SP2 and upgrade then reinstall SP2 onto Professional.
