What do you have to do with the software installed on the old PC?
-- What do you want to do?
-- Did you purchase and install the software yourself? If so - uninstall
it from the old, install it on the new and move on.
-- Did it come with the computer - pre-installed? If so - depending on
the licensing for said software - it may be stuck on that computer.

If you give away the computer, what will the receiver have to do with the
computer?
-- What do they want to do?
-- Did you (you should) give them the method necessary to restore the
system to its "newly purchased" shine? In other words - is there a
restoration procedure or is there CDs to install from or what?

Can you erase all the data?
-- Sure. I would personally copy it off first.
-- You should follow the manufacturers restoration procedure. That would
erase everything and restore to the "just bought it" goodness you remember
from day one.

If you don't have the installation disks for the application programs on the
old computer then you can't install them on the new computer so they are
useless to you if you choose to sell the system. However if you have the
installation disks check the licenses that came with them. Most likely you
can install them onto a new computer.

You can sell the old computer with or without the hard drive. If selling it
with the hard drive then you should erase it. This is relatively easy to do.
Many of the more paranoid people might tell you to destroy the drive but
realistically if you run a program like the free version of Active KillDisk
found here http://www.killdisk.com/ it will make finding anything useful on
your drive very remote to all but the most advanced and dedicated hacker
which is likely someone who you wouldn't be selling to or who wouldn't
bother with a basic home user system anyway.
