Current6ly running Win98se and considering u/g to Win 2000.
I have considered u/g to XP but fought shy due to incompatibilities at
present.!
Are there any experienced users who have made the change from Win98 > win2k?
and have true benefits?
Not too techy please (newbie).

Much depends on your hardware and what it can run.
If you can run XP, do it. 2000 isn't even being sold now in stores, AFAIK.
You can disable the shiny colorful candylike XP user interface pretty easily
and use 'classic mode'. XP is really the same kernel as 2k, but with shinier
toolbars.

Presuming you have enough RAM, etc., to run either smoothly, I think you'll
see many benefits either way. Both are much more stable than 9x. I am
personally very sold on XP.

What incompatibilities do you speak of, btw?

And to add to Lanwench's comments whichever OS you choose, don't upgrade. Do
a clean install by booting from the CD-Rom. During Windows setup, at some
point, will want to confirm the previous operating system for the upgrade;
at that point you'll simply insert the qualified product install CD for it
to verify. Then the install will proceed.

I've got an old crusty amd 550mhz box here, and just recently I just
upgraded to win2k. I didn't want to go with XP because of possible
performance issues with an old crusty box. I got tired of win98 crashing
and it was so dated. Win2k is very hard to crash, it is so much better than
98. I even took the time to install sp4 and the security patches to get it
up to date. If you have at least a PIII processor and at least 128mb of
ram, I would suggest windows xp, though. Just turn off all the eye candy,
install the security patches, and you're good to go.

Thanks for reply.
At least it would be better than 98SE!....and progressing.
I just here of too many "problems" in N/G's with Xp (not install user
friendly yet), hence this post of mine.
I do not understand the "candy" and "security patches" reference you
make....assume it is related to XP?
I realise I will probably have to go XP at some later stage....when more
"fixes" have been made.

Not sure what yo'ure worried about with regard to XP. It's incredibly
stable - and as I said, it's essentially the same OS as Win2k with more
bells and whistles. Most of the problems you'll see in the XP groups are due
to, how shall one say, user error, or badly written applications. I use XP
at nearly all my client sites and have been very pleased with it.
