Hi, there must be many people who have moved all their mail from XP on one
laptop to Vista mail on a new laptop. These two computers can see each other
on the network. How can I easily move all history, contacts, folders etc
from one to the other?

Pardon me if I'm wrong but I dont beleive the easy transfer applet can
convert Outlook data on one PC to Mail on another.

You would need, on the Winxp Pc, export your Outlook data to Outlook
Express, then copy the msg store to the Vista PC & import that data into
Mail.
Or;
Set up Outlook on the Vista PC, connect it to your old OL data file, then in
Mail import that data

Admittedly I've never tried Windows Easy Transfer with Outlook
on XP, but I've never seen a caveat that it wouldn't do that.

OL groups, posts from MVP's, specificaly warn against using any transfer
wizard to port OL data.

Are you referring to Outlook Express in XP or Office Outlook? Big
difference...

Thank you, I did not realise that this newsgroup was a source of business
and income for some, I thought it was more a Help your Neighbour sort of
thing.

It's supposed to be a Help your Neighbor type of thing, with a rather
loose definition of neighbors, but most of the people who respond that
way insist that it take place in the newsgroup instead of by email. Also,
don't be surprised if a Help your Neighbor response isn't until the next
day.

To transfer from Outlook under XP to Windows Mail under Vista,
you have two choices:

1. Install Outlook, preferably version 2003 or later, on your Vista
Machine. Versions 2000 and 2002 will also run under Vista, but
with some problems. Windows Mail needs to use a part of Outlook
with MAPI in its name to be able to import the .pst files Outlook
stores nearly everything in. Some, but not all, versions of Microsoft
Office include Outlook. A free trial version should run more than
long enough to be used in this transfer.

2. On an XP machine with both Outlook Express and Outlook
installed, first import the .pst file into Outlook Express. Then
transfer from Outlook Express to Windows Mail.

Bring along the .wab file if you want your old contacts. Copy
the transferred files to a directory on the hard drive of your
Vista computer first. A directory you create for this purpose
under your Documents directory is a good choice. Make sure
the copied files are all read-write instead of readonly before
you tell Windows Mail to import the entire directory containing
them. If this does not import the old contacts, start Windows
Mail, then click on Tools, then Windows Contacts, then Import,
then Windows Address Book File (Outlook Express contacts),
then Import, then find the .wab file and click on it, then Close,
then close the contacts window. Don't expect this to transfer
any contact groups correctly, only the contacts inside and outside
these groups.

If anything else fails to transfer correctly, give us more details on
exactly what.
