From header missing domain

Exchange2003, Outlook2003

An incoming email just shows "From: JohnDough", with no "@domain.com" on the end
of it. When replying to the email, Exchange tries to append my domain to his
username, causing the email to bounce.

How can I force the incoming "From" header to show the full return address?

Did "JohnDough" actually specify his email address properly in his mail
client?
Does this happen for all emails you receive from external sender or just
from "JohnDough"?

Robert, thank you for your response. My problem may actually occur before it
gets to exchange.

Our Exchange2k3 box sits behind a postfix based Linux mail gateway. The From
header that actually reaches Exchange simply shows JohnDough, nothing else. The
only mention of the actual sender is in "Return-Path: (e-mail address removed)"

So my question now is: Why did Exchange/Outlook accept JohnDough as a valid
From header? Shouldn't it have bounced back?

Sidenote: I have just added a canonical address map of johndough to
(e-mail address removed) in our postfix config. Hopefully Exchange will
receive a good From header now.

I cannot tell as I don't have a copy of the raw email before it is processed by
our gateway mail server. The copy in our archive just shows the mail header of
JohnDough.

Only JohnDough's emails experience this issue.

It sounds like an issue in the way it got submitted then indeed also because
it happens with only one sender.

Only when you have set your filters to do so. Otherwise; if the email can be
delivered, it will get delivered.
