Friends hard drive is not being detected in xp setup

From what I understand, my friends hard drive is EIDE.
Hei s trying to go from ME to XP but doing XP completely
from scratch. In doing so, he says it loads all temporary
files then when it comes to detecting the hard drives it
says it cannot be found. Anyway to get it to see it?

I am having the same problem: I installed Windows 98 on a
new PC with a SCSI hard drive, and quickly decides to
replace it with Windows XP. I did a format C: /S to get
rid of Windows 98.

In trying the install XP, the CD-ROM boots and starts to
unpact files, but soon stops with the message "Cannot find
hard drive". But I can boot DOS from a floppy disk and
then get a C: prompt.

What are we doing wrong?

Is some there some remainder of Windows 98 in boot sector
that blocking the XP installer. How do I get rid of it?
