I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista and have frequent Screen Freezes.
This is very disturbing and I am wondering whether I should have upgraded.
The only option to shut down my computer is to actually cold boot it down -
there are no other options. Can anyone out there help me?

If Vista was not pre installed, then you should back up your data, boot off
of the Vista Upgrade install DVD, format the HD, and lay down Vista fresh
whipping out XP.

I can't because the situation is, Dell sold me the computer with XP, with the
understanding the the "Vista Upgrade" was an added option - so it is an
"Upgrade" I don't think I can format my hard drive and get rid of XP - It is
not a full version of Vista. Thank you Mr. Arnold. -

Well, Compaq sold me a laptop with Windows ME, which was causing the
wireless to crash the O/S with the wireless card installed. They told me if
I went to Win 2K at the time, they would not support the O/S on the machine.
I didn't need them to support it. I went to Win 2K on the laptop and never
looked back.

I got a HP laptop recently which had Vista Premium and it didn't fore fill
my needs. HP told me if I upgraded, that they wouldn't support Ultimate
either. I didn't need them to support it in the first place, either. So, I
upgraded and never looked back.

Vista Upgrade is a "full version" of Vista. I don't even know where you're
coming up with the nonsense on that one, Vista Upgrade not being a full
version of Vista. Who told you that? <g>

If you have the retail version of Vista Upgrade on a DVD/CD, then you can
boot off of the DVD/CD, format the HD, wipe out XP and lay down Vista in its
entirety on the HD.

Sometimes, you have to take matters into your own hands to fix things,
because know one is going to do it for you, and you have to support things
yourself.

Hi, EvChrysler300.

You haven't given us nearly enough details. For instance, how long does the
freeze last: 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day? What is going on at the time of the
freeze: drafting a Word document, playing a game, surfing the 'Net? Which
version of Vista: Home Basic x86 or Ultimate x64? You said you upgraded,
so I assume that Vista was not pre-installed on your computer.

During the first week of running Vista, it is not unusual to experience some
slowdowns and even occasional "freezes". Some of these delays are caused by
the Indexing Service running in the background; it is supposed to work only
behind the scenes and give us control instantly when we press a key or move
the mouse, but sometimes the delay is noticeable. Windows Mail also does
some compacting and other database maintenance in the background and
sometimes experiences delays; we often see the phrase, "Not Responding",
during these periods. Usually, all we have to do is wait, but we may have
to wait a long time before we regain control

Rather than just keep shooting in the dark with "maybe" guesses, I'll wait
for you to tell us more about the symptoms.

Oh, "cold booting" solves some kind of problems, but it usually is not a
permanent solution. You really should not keep doing that.

frequent Screen Freezes.
This is very disturbing

Not to mention it's impossible to say, ten times fast.

I'm sorry about the problem, and I will be watching for a solution; I've just
been trying unsuccessfully to read your subject line without losing my
dentures.

I too have this issue. My issue is based around my wireless 3Com card
and Vista connecting to an Access Point. When I'm not using wireless,
and the card is not in use, Vista is responsive. However when I am
using the wireless PCMCIA card to connect to my network (and gateway)
the system 'can' become unresponsive and freeze whilst powering down
all my peripherals and just sitting there!!

This does not ALWAYS happen, however it seems to happen approximately
75% of the time. The amount of time it takes from Wireless power on
to freeze varies, but the result is always the same - cold shut down
and reboot.

Anyone anywhere have any help on this? I have posted myself but
nobody has replied. I think it has to be a 3Com driver issue or a
problem with wireless connectivity (or network) within Vista itself.
Many people have experienced this.

I am currently using an XP driver for wireless pcmcia card as no Vista
ones exist!

Your last sentence, don't you think that could be the problem?

Yes - it could well be - the point is what alternative do I have?
There are no Vista drivers out there. Goes to show you should never
completely adopt an Operating System until it has achieved SP1 status,
especially a Microsoft one.

I personally quite like Vista...but I'm not a) going to roll it out
across our clients at work, and b) will not roll it out to any more of
my personal clients.

It's something you have to research before making the move, for sure. Too
many just jump into it without checking. I don't know of a solution, sorry.

Why a) and b)? They all have the same hardware? I don't think I follow the
thought here.

Hi there, I am having the same problem as you are having that it my
computer keeps on freezing randomly taking a few seconds and sometimes it can
take as long as 25 minutes. I updated windows but the freezing keeps on
happening . Anyone has any idea or solution to this problem?

You are not alone. Mine too. However it always seems to clear itself and
everything continues. This "freezing" does not seem to generate errors in
the problem reporting area. I've sort of learned to live with it for now in
the hopes somebody at Microsoft will fix it (some day, some month!)

So you are sure that its a problem with Vista and nothing to do with hardware?

When I do a clean install of my windows vista ultimate a popup arrives
telling me that my windows vista ultimate upgrade can't be installed without
the xp OS onboard. How do I get around that situation?
