Frequent Internet Disruptions

Hi - I am using a Wi-Fi connection on my Thinkpad laptop (Win Vista
Business). Frequently and without warning, the laptop drops the Wi-Fi
connection and then just as suddenly and without any prodding of my own it
re-connects again. I know that it is not a problem of the internet signal
per se, since my coworkers in the same room have no such disruptions.

Any ideas on what can be done to fix the problem?

Thanks

Does the router you are using support Vista? Many older routers need a
firmware update, so go to the router mftr.'s website and see.

Another thing to do is update the wireless adapter drivers. Get them from
Lenovo.

Thanks for the response.

While I don't know how to go about updating the router, I do know that other
users in my office who run Vista machines off the same router do not have
these issues with losing their wi-fi signal.

Also, my Thinkpad has all drivers updated (using the built in updater)

So what else could I try?

It could be that you have too many connections going to the wireless router
and not enough bandwidth. This isn't something you'll be able to check in a
newsgroup. If you have an IT Dept., this is their job. If you don't have an
IT Dept., have a local professional come on-site and check things out for
you. This will not be someone from a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of
place.

It could be that your physical location is not optimum for the wireless
connection. Since I can't see your machine and setup, I can't test this for
you. Or there could be interference where you are sitting. Again, have a
professional check this out for you.

It could be that you have too much network chatter going on. See paragraph
1.

Or you could have a faulty wireless network adapter. The test for that would
be to go to various other locations (not in the office) and try their
wireless. If you have the identical problem, then the issue is with your
computer and you would call your IT Dept. or Lenovo tech support, depending
on your situation.

There could be other factors such as malware, too. Someone knowledgeable
needs to be physically looking at the machine.
