frequent freezing

I have a custom built system that I put together from an
older e-machines computer. I have an Intel Pentium III
1.0Ghz processor with 512 meg of RAM. I recently
installed a Maxtor 160 GB hard drive and Windows XP (I
installed XP only a couple days ago). The e-machines
computer came with Windows ME, which was installed on my
old hard drive and my new one until I upgraded to XP. I
have had my currents system for about 3 years.

Last year my computer started to freeze fairly
frequently. It mostly happen when I was multitasking
(listening to music while surfing the web, watching
videos, etc.). This problem progressively got worse over
the year. Now, with XP installed, it freezes when I click
on the Start menu or try to install a new program! I know
it isn't from lack of space on the hard drive since not
even 1/4 of it is taken up.

I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some
helpful hints on this problem of mine. Is there any tests
I can run to determine what the problem is?? Do you think
it is the software? hardware? Please help me or give me
any suggestions that may come up!

Check your memory.
Do you have one simm of 512 or two 256's
If you have two remove one and try one at a time.
You need good memory when it comes to XP
