For some time now I've been getting blue screen crashes while surfing the net, most of which have a similar report to this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: System Error
Event Category: (102)
Event ID: 1003
Date: 13/07/2004
Time: 00:19:18
User: N/A
Computer:
Description:
Error code 000000d1, parameter1 0057c69f, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 f6cb2f39.

I deleted the computer name in case it can be used by some hacker against me, but all the rest is how I look at it on my screen I think. Any ideas what my problem is? I am at my wits end with this. My computer manufacturer is no help at all. And this happens constantly. I have had several minidumps and twice I have had to reinstall everything because of this. Please help.

Thanks in advance

this is what I found, although the paramteters vary, it does say that they will according to your configuration. Anyway, it suggests that you apply any critical updates that are available.

As far as I know I have applied all the critical updates that are missing from my computer. I make sure I check the Windows Update site frequently and always have automatic update running. Which update am I missing? Critical update for what?

This is most likely caused by a faulty device driver. Have you recently
installed any new devices to your PC? When your PC blue screens, it will
usually display a device driver as the suspect. This will be displayed in
the blue screen contents itself. The filename should be something like
NV4_MINI.SYS or something like that.

Thanks for your help Fusion. As for whether I have installed any new decvices on here, no I haven't, and I have had this problem for a long time. I have had to reinstall my windows op system at least three times because of it, and my comp manufacturers have been pretty useless on the help front too.

I would love to see the the actual bluescreen reference for the problem, but the trouble is everytime it happens, it flicks by so fast, I don't have time to make a note of it before it shuts down completely, usually wiping stuff from my laptop in the process.

I think you are right about it being a driver thing though, as I have managed to see that, it says something like driver equal to or less than, which in my troubleshooting book means it could refer to anything really so that doesn't help much.

Any ideas how I can freeze the bluescreen to read it when it happens? That way I might be able to get more info.

Also please see my reply to Ivee's response.

Thanks

Thanks for the link Ivee. As far as I know (unless it is bundled with something and I don't know about it), I don't have the AtGuard firewall program on my computer.

When I look in my event viewer, it says the following most of the time, before I have crashes:

The ATWPKT2 service was successfully sent a start control.

This seems to be connected to the problem. When I put a search in google I find a few posts but this looks like it might help a bit, but I'm not sure if this is my problem or not, and it involves deleting/renaming files etc which I am no expert on. What do you think? Here's the link:

Now if my problem is related to AOL then this will decide something else for me. I am currently deciding to go with either Pipex or AOL for broadband. But I need one that can act as an FTP server too, so I am looking into this too, but if AOL is messing up my computer, then I guess my decision might be made in favour of Pipex anyway.

So, as you can see, assistance here is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Oops forgot to mention too, with regard to the Windows Updates, I have done the obvious Windows Update, Office Updates, yet when I run Microsoft Baseline Security Analyser it says I am still missing some, one of which is critical. I tried to put right one of the minor ones, but afterwards it still says it's missing. As far as I know all the updates are there anyway. I'm pretty careful I hope. So are these just showing up as a result of errors when MSBSA is trying to read my files? Just thought I'd ask while I was on the subject.

Thanks

Rename files,

Here is a quote from a google search forum( likely the same one you read:)
"FINALLY DELETED by RENAMING them so AOL client would not see them."
It seems that renamimg deletes the original.

see if you can get your laptop to stop rebooting after the blue scren, that is if it does reboot. I forgot to ask in earlier posts.
To do this,
Start>My Computer>right click properties>Advance>startup and recovery>settings.
Clear the check mark next to automatically restart. Place a mark next to all other boxes, click okay which will bring you back to the previous page, Click error reporting, enable all error reporting, click okay.
Now, hopefully the next time you crash, the blue screen will stay on long enough to enable you to write down the Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS....message.

So, are you using AOL now? because from everyting I found, ATWPKT2 is a part of AOL, here is a quote from another forum,
"Atwpk2t is part of AOL. I had to set services.exe to Options= Allow Driver/Services Installation. No more messages on atwpkt2"

Thanks Ivee. I found both the files by doing a search but I've thought it wise to do them one at a time and see if that makes a difference. Don't want to change stuff too much if it's not necessary you know...so I've just done the .vxd file for now and have changed it to .old. It says that's the virtual device driver, so if something stops working I'm hoping I'll know soon enough.

Thanks also for the reboot prevention info. If none of the above works, I'll try it.

I think I'll give it a week or so now and see if I have any more trouble.

You've been a great help. Thanks

you're welcome, I hope you get it resolved. I have to go to work, but please post back your results. I'd like to know if you get your laptop up and running.
