Hi Mark,
Are you sure it is clean. In other words, do you run an up to date AVP, firewall, and software to keep the malware and Spyware gremlins out?
Is it a branded computer or a clone?
Try starting it is Safe Mode menu and choose Last Known Good Configuration. This is taking a shot that the files haven't been overwritten. No harm done if they have. Usually you use this, when you discover something has gone wrong , and you immediately reboot and choose this fix. After that, it assumed that everyone makes and up to date ERD and Full backup(,but my experience tells me that this doesn't happen until after the first major failure).
Restart it after and see if you still have the problem.
Don't rule out hardware, but try these other trouble shooting programs first.
If it still does, try this. Go to a Commandline and type CSKDSK /R. Say "Y" for yes and reboot. this takes somewhere around 30 minutes.
I do suggest you make and ERD and Full Backup prior, just in the remotest of cases.
If that doesn't do it, "In Place Upgrade" time.

After that, "Clean Install time".
Of course, from the first question, if you have a "not clean" machine, I would dstart with all the virus scanners and Stinger. Here are the URL's.
ce a day. There are no error messages or anything, it just freezes. It usually happens when I'm doing absolutely nothing-- the screen saver is usually on, but not always. The keyboard goes dead too and I have to shut the system down and restart using the power switch.
