W2k Freezes on Startup and Safe Mode Doesn't Work

System: Windows 2000 Professional SP4 256MB RA

On startup I get the error "NDETECT caused a fatal error and will terminate...". When I click th
"OK" button (only choice) I get a black screen and the system is frozen. I tried "Alt-Ctrl Delete
and clicking on "Task Manager" but a window displays and quickly disappears so I can't do anythin
with that

I tried starting up in Safe Mode but it gets as far as displaying the "Safe Mode" words in all fou
corners of the screen then the system stops and freezes

I tried starting in "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and this time it gets to the point of displayin
the "C:/>" prompt but the Logon screen never comes up before this prompt. The exact display is
"C:/>Document and Settings/Administrator
When I typed "CD \" I get just the "C:/>" prompt. But when I typed "C:/>CD Program Files"
get the message "Too many parameters". I don't know what's going on here

I wanted to rename "NDETECT.exe" to see if the system would then come up ok. I also though
of running "regedit" and deleting the entire "Symantec" folder. But I can't seem to get to th
"Program Files" folder

Anyone have an idea what's going on here? If someone can help me get to "Program Files" i
my problem solution (stated above) correct to solve my system freeze? Or am I looking in th
wrong direction

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

NTDETECT.Com is necessary for Windows to start; you cannot rename it and
expect it to work. NTDETECT is in the root of the C drive and not in the
Program Files directory. You might try copying NTDETECT.Com from some other
source into the root of C.

The problem you encountered when trying to change to the Program Files
directory at the command prompt is because of the space character between
Program and Files. In this situation, "Program Files" needs to be bounded by
quotes.

Colon, thankyou for your reply. The module I was talking abou
is "NDETECT" (not NTDETECT) used for the "Symantec Norto
Protected Recycle Bin". There is a known problem with usin
the "Norton Protected Recycle Bin" and having an Iomega Zi
drive connected to your system (I found this on the Internet)

I think my problem is how to stop NDETECT from running an
freezing my system. Thankyou for telling me about using quote
around the words "Program Files". NDETECT is in "Progra
Files" in the Symantec folder (I believe)

So do you think that renaming "NDETECT.exe" or using "Regedit
to delete the 'Symantec" folder will help get my system started

Thanks very much
