Freezing when adjusting volume on compaq laptop

When adjusting the volume on my compaq V2000 laptop Windows keeps freezing.
I have to hold down the power button until the computer starts up again. Do
I need to reinstall Windows? Thanking you in anticipation

Try reinstalling the sound card drivers. Open Device Manager, open the
properties of the sound card, and remove the sound card. A refresh, or
maybe a restart of the laptop should find the card and reinstall the
drivers.

Look at the Compaq support site for driver updates.
