freezing up

I just had windowsxp installed on my 5710 compaq and had
more memory added. It was working great, and alot faster.
then I windows update started sending messages saying I
need to update security updates and other windowsxp
things. NOW my computer is freezing up and really slow
on downloading and installing things. What should I do?
Like i said it was working fine till i updated.

Have you scanned for viruses/trojans? Have you run Adaware
or Spybot to stop your pc sending data to marketing sites?
Have you run checkdisk or defrag? I would start with these.
