Freezing problem

Hi all

I have suddenly got a problem with my XP Pro machine freezing on me, shortly
after booting. It can freeze at any stage, either while apps are running or
even standing idle on the desktop. I have updated and scanned with Nortons
and Adware, but to no avail.

I have look at the event viewer and this is what it says:

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal
processing. HRESULT was 80070422 from line 44 of
d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp. Please contact
Microsoft Product Support Services to report this error.

Before I go through the proper channels and contact Microsoft, which will
not be until next week, I was wondering if anyone out there knew the cause
of this error, so I could get the problem resolved sooner rather than later.

Thanks for reading.

Are you sure that you don't have hardware problems like
CPU overheating?

No, I have checked the temp and it's running at 47oC while idle, but the
machine still freezes. I admit I have still got to check all the other
internal fans MOBO fan and video fan just in case they make a difference.

Hi Tyma,

Did you recently update or install anything to coincide with this? Possibly
video drivers? Otherwise, I'd suspect you have a hardware problem.

No I have not installed anything in the way of software, drivers or
hardware, it just started happening. I did do a system restore, to be on
the safe side, but made no difference.

Another bit of detail is that when it does freeze I still get mouse
movement, but I cannot do anything else, even when I do the Ctrl+Alt+Del,
nothing happens.

I thought about hardware failure, but it does not freeze in safe mode which,
surely, would point to software/drivers. Would/could a virus/trojan cause
this even though NAV or Adware doesn't pick anything up?

Troubleshooting Computer Lockups (Freezes)
Many readers write each week with a similar problem:
their computers periodically lock up or "freeze," so that
the mouse and keyboard won't function and nothing can be
done for a period of time (sometimes the system unlocks
after a while; in other cases you have to reboot). This
is a common problem but not an easy one to diagnose
because it has so many causes. It's like a person going
to the doctor with the complaint of a cough; the problem
could be a cold, an allergy, a substance stuck in the
throat, cancer, pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc. Here are
some common causes of lockups:
Software incompatibility
Hardware incompatibility or incorrect device driver
Bad RAM
Video card problems
Dying power supply
Processor getting too hot
The first step in diagnosing the problem is to keep a
journal showing exactly what you were doing each time the
system froze. This can help you spot patterns - for
example, if the lockup occurs when you try to print, or
whenever you play a sound, that suggests a problem with
the specific hardware device or its software driver.
Heat, bad RAM or a power supply that's about to give out
are more likely if the lockups are random

Hi Tyma,

Ok, well if all is well in Safe mode, then you have the correct assumption
in that it has to be a software or driver issue. And, an AV program is only
as good as the definitions it is using. Anyhow, you need to isolate the
culprit, try the steps here:

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP [Q310560]

and if that doesn't find it, use:
