Freezing during 'update'

Hey, I'm having some confusing problem with Vista. It downloaded some updates
about a week ago, and so I shut down the PC at about 11pm and it started to
update. When I wake up at 8am the next day, it still says it's installing
update 1 of 5. I needed to use my computer, and I can't believe that one
package takes more than 9 hours to install (how many GB would the download
be?!), so obviously I did a hard shutdown.

Every time I turn my PC off now it tries to do this update, and gets stuck
exactly the same way. Is there any way I can either force this update to
install, or stop it from doing so altogether?

Cheers.

Boot into "Safe Mode" and use System Restore
which is found by going to Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
