Freezing at expanding files

I've been trying to intall vista home premium on a new hard drive. Every time
i try to install, everything works until it starts to "copy files" which is
taking like .5seconds, then when it goes to "expanding files" it stays at 0%
for hours and the dvd drive sounds like it is going crazy. then it comes up
saying cannot access file D:/sources/install.wim I dont know if the dvd drive
is going bad but i bought an external drive and tried to use it but i cant
boot from that drive because it is not installed. can anyone help?

Did you create a partition on the new hard drive
and then format the partition?
