Bobby / Derek,

Recently we asked Waldinger for their opinion on converting the cooler
to a freezer and vice / versa.

Rod Brown, Waldinger's food storage specialist is unwilling to consider
this as an option, for one thing he things the cooler base is not
adequately insulated and therefore he could not guarantee the work.

I have contacted Wolin 3 times about this matter and requested a similar
evaluation but received no response. We normally get a very prompt
response from their service department but they are poor at providing
quotes or advice on refrigeration.

At this time the cooler is working reasonably well and has done so all
summer, the freezer, as you know has had problems. We tried removing
defrost cycles but this resulted in the core of the evaporator coil
freezing up and reduced it's efficiency to the point where the
temperature rose to around 15 - 20 degrees. I put it back to 4 defrost
cycles and it appears to have held around -2 - 0 degrees but the ambient
temperature has also fallen from the high 80s / 90s down to 50 /60 at
night and 70 / 80 during the day. The core is no longer freezing up, but
during defrost periods the insulation is not efficient enough to hold
the temperature down.

The defrost mechanism was recently checked and found to be working and
the door heater is working.

The other freezer in the service hall does not seem able to hold 0 at
all. We appear to have exhausted all the possibilities.

Hmmm..... I doubt you'll get much help here, but ya never know.

Hehe, not sure how that got copied to here, never mind. If anybody does
have any suggestions though I'd be more than happy to hear them.

All you can do right now is wait for Vista SP1. Who knows... ;-))

Actually thinking about it I have managed to recover data from dying
disk drives by placing them (Connected) in a Ziplock bag with a bag of
frozen peas or something top and bottom. WD had some controller heat
problems and this did suffice for one time reading, though a little
impractical for regular use (unless you like a lot of peas), Think I'll
call Rod and ask if he's interested in making that "Food storage and
data recovery"...

Your comment reminds me of a time that I had to recover data from a
crashed hard drive. The user was a judge and she was adamant that she
had to have the data from the hard drive. I wrapped the drive in static
bags
and then put it in a ziploc, then left it in the freezer over night.
The next
morning I set up a machine with a network boot disk connected the hard
drive and fired up the machine. I was able to recover the data before the
drive catastrophically failed. Much to my chagrin the data recovered was
the judges favorite games!!!

Not downloaded from Piratebay I hope :)

The drives I had problems with were all < 6 months old but for some
reason the controllers seemed to develop a "Thermal Runaway" problem and
an extra fan wouldn't do it. The obvious heat was what led me to
consider the freezer as a possibility.

What prompted you to think of that?

I know we're somewhat off topic but not completely :)

Actually this was back in 1995 when I worked for a consulting firm. I tried
the freezer option with no real hope of success. To me it was somewhat akin
to a myth, but as the county was a big client I had to try everything
possible no matter how ridiculous it might seem. I was quite suprised that
it worked to tell you the truth, but since then I have never failed to give
any myth at least the benefit of the doubt, no matter how ridiculous it
might seem.
