Freeze on resuming from standby

This system (homebuilt with WinXP Home SP2) does this about half the time.
If I'm going to be away from the machine for a while I put it in standby.
When I come back and tap the spacebar to resume, Windows appears to restart
but freezes at the login screen, i.e. no response to the mouse (standard MS
wheel mouse optical, USB). So then I have to shut down and restart
completely.

The other half of the time it resumes as it should with no problems.
Generally I shut down all programs on the desktop before going into standby,
but this seems to make no difference. It seems to me the problem *may* be
more likely to occur when the system is left in standby for a long time,
like several hours, but I can't be sure of this.

The rest of the system is: AMD Sempron 2300+ in an EPoX microATX motherboard
(forget the model) with VIA chipset KM400-8237, 512 MB DDR, Radeon 9600 Pro
AGP, one Maxtor 80GB HDD, one LiteOn combo drive, MS MultiMedia keyboard.

Any idea why I frequently have this freeze on resume? The system runs
problem-free except for this.

You'll have to chk the specifics but thier are a few hotfixes for
hibernation if
SP2 is installed.#909095 #892559

Thanks, but those are for problems related to hibernation. My problem is
with resuming from standby, and is not mentioned in those items in the KB
(or any other items I can find in the KB).

I have a similar problem on my Dell C840 laptop XP PS2. Interesting thing
for me is that it doesn't happen when I go manually into standby while
running on the
battery. Have you been able to get any further info on this problem?
