Freeze During Install

I have WIndows 2000 Advanced server SP4 installtion CD. When I install it on
my computer, it freezes during installation when it is trying to Write to
Registry.

If you install using Windows 2003 Server, it works fine. Can any one help?

hi thanks for responding. I am going to give you a list oof things that
happents during setup:

Let me start with the the screen disply that says "Installing Devices"
(A) Installing Devices - Scanning for Devices (during this time, screen
flickers etc..)
- Takes about 4 minutes
(B) Regional setting -- ie. Local and Keyboard
(C) Enter Name and Organization
(D) Licensing - I selected per Server (5 clients licence)
(E) Enter Computer Name and Administrator password
(F) WIndows 200 Components - Add/remove programs
- I just keep the default settings
(G) Date/Time settings - I change the zone to Central
(H) Network Settings
- Installing Network components
- Installing components
(I) Performing Final Tasks
- Installing Start Menu Items
- Register components
- the progress bar get up to about 40% and then everything
freezes keyboard and mouse, I let it on for about 3 hours and nothing happens.

Like I said there is no issues when I install windows 2003 server, but I
need to install the Windows 2000 Advance server.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You might try removing all non-essential hardware, get through the install,
then ADD the hardware back in one-at-a-time. BTW what drive controller are
you using?

Hi again,

Only removable Items in my computer are: Floppy Drive, CD Drive, Zip Drive,
Hard Drive and AGP Video Card. Everything else is build into the board which
is not much. My computer is not an official Server, it is AMD Semperon 2200
Medium Tower with 1 Gig of RAM.

I am placeing the server CD into the CD rom and boot from it and install the
OS into C partition with NTFS formating that is created from the setup. Any
Driver that is being used are determined by the setup.

Any help will be appriciated.

Kind regards
Sam

Yep, remove the zip for sure. What drive controller? If other than standard
IDE (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), you
may need to boot the Windows 2000 setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early
and very important (at setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to
prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify additional
drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied
Windows 2000 driver for your drive's controller in drive "A"

Hi Thanks for all your help so far. I have removed the Zip Drive. Then I
pressed F6 as you instructed. My drive is EIDE Wensern Digital 120 GB 7200
RPM. Unfortunately Onle one CD came with the hard drive so I was not able to
plce a manufacturer provided Drivers into A drive. I tried to go to the
Wester Digital website and they did not have a Driver download for Windows
2000 that will fint into A drive.

So I have created a support ticket with western digital to findout if they
can help as well.

I will keep you updated. Please let me know if I can try something else.

kind regards
Sam

Not for the drive; for the drive controller. Skip the F6 step for standard
IDE controller.
