Freeware XP\2000 Drive Image: tutorial for UBCD and DrvImagerXP

R

REM

I "tried" to create a page that makes creation of an "Ultimate Boot CD
4 Win" more straightforward. Jeez. There are so many ways to make
coasters (I made my share and more) that a linear description
detailing pretty much everything seemed like the best approach.

Once created, an UBCD is very valuable in many ways. It is necessary
to restore as boot drive using DrvImagerXP.

The CD creation is broken into 10 steps. I used screen captures to
show the progress at each substep (58 images).

This is a rough draft that is open for feedback, especially from
anyone who tries to use this as a guide to create the UBCD and
DrvImagerXP to create\restore the image.

Too detailed? Not enough information? How does it strike you as a
detailed guide?

More detailed info should be found at the UBCD4Win site:

http://www.ubcd4win.com/

The above site should be the definitive authority should I have missed
something!

I tried to make the various images small, but I went with large to
make them clearer. Sorry dialup folks, I'm one too. Best viewed at
1024 +...

Typos and such appreciated when pointed out, and readibility problems
as well.

I haven't even validated the page yet. I want to get the basic info
right first...

http://www.woundedmoon.org/UBCD/UBCD.html

Progress is slow, but I really want to get it right so that anyone can
create and use these valuable tools.

I'll be back later today to get any errors or bugs repaired.

The info and screen shots are great! :)

I started reading with no knowledge of the process - the steps are laid out very well - IMO this is a very helpful project.

but. . .

The page took forever to load (really) and kept redrawing as I tried to read it - a most frustrating experience. I suggest you break the tutorial into several pages and/or use smaller images with links to larger images for those who want a better view.

my 2 cents. . .

Would I be able to achieve the bootable CD end result with my OEM
WinXP CD, instead of the MS WinXP CD please?

The page loaded well and fairly quickly considering the number of images (I
have broadband). I had no trouble at all reading and understanding the
directions.

Terrific job, REM. I use UBCD4Win and it's a Godsend. It was a tad
confusing to set it up, but your guides is very clear and makes the
job very manageable. Good on ya.

yes it works fine with oem cd's. However if you have one of the dell
versions i have heard of issues. If it is the normal oem cd with the
holographic on the front it's not cut down or crippled like the dell ones
are. I have not heard anything specific about the other manufacturers.

I had a bit of trouble loading it myself. I'll see if I can work on
making smaller images. I'll zip the entire thing as is and make it
available as a download for offline viewing also. Those of us who have
weak connections can use the zip file for now.

There is a "Dell-fix" available.

Give it a shot Terry and let us know how it worked out.

I'm not sure at all, but I "think" that when you run AutoStreamer it
will produce an XP install image with SP2 integrated. That is, it will
leave the OEM stuff behind and leave you with a clean XP install CD.

I'm very curious, but I don't have an OEM CD to play with. At the
worst you'll create a few coasters.

Thanks Larry. I made a v2.3 CD quite awhile back. Even with that I
made close to 20 coasters in figuring out the ways not to go about it.

There are several alternative methods, but describing each clouds a
single step by step method.

if you say so I'm on the ubcd forums and the 911 forums all the time and
even make my own modules. I have quite a few on my site and I have never
ever heard of a dell fix. Links please?

No the thing about oem cd's is that they have less than the other cd's they
are more like the upgrade cd but instead of only being able to do upgrades
you can only do fresh installs. Retail lets you do both.

Having said that dell even includes less in that respect because they remove
device drivers and other things. They also add propriatary drivers taht are
needed to work with dell boxen.

When you use autosteamer it simply slipstreams sp2 into your current cd. It
will not add more or take away anything in that respect. You will get new
device drivers, security updates, and extra security features but other
than that it will not add anything that was not there to begin with.

I would be curious also. Also because of the missing drivers and other
things you may not even get it to build and if it does build then it will
most likely only work on dells unless you add back the missing drivers from
another cd.

On a side note if it does complain about missing files you can still build
the iso by using my autobuild scripts.

http://www.webmedic.net/webmedics-plugins-vf43.html

I have used it multiple times after using nlite to make the cd liter. Try it
out and see if you like them. I also have auto-updating virii and spyware
scanners.

I'm getting ready soon to release my own distro of it kind of like ubcd4win
but it is more highly optimized and takes less ram. It also includes tons
of drivers and works with most hardware I can get my hands on for testing.
I run a computer shop and need things to be able to run on a wide variety
of hardware.

Upgrade? Or install over?

That's a good point I guess. My OEM Win 98SE had all sorts of trial
versions on it. That's the crud that I'd want to leave behind. There
must be some way to grab the drivers that come with the retail
version.

Great deal. Holler when you release.

Thanks, both. When I get around to trying it, I'll report back.

you can do reinstalls but no upgrades with the oem version.

I sent this by accident back to the author instead of the list. So to the
author sorry for the relist.
