Freeware to open a .cr2 image

Hi
My son sent me some fotos he took with his Canon digital camera
All the images are in .cr2 format & and I can't open them
Is there any freeware to open these files please?

just to be fully correct, XnView _and_ IrfanView should do the job,
I should have said ;-)
