Freeware GIF animator

I need a freeware program that can create an animated GIF from several
GIF images. I checked Google but the only ones I could find mentioned in
here previously were not freeware, such as Ulead GIF Animator.

Yeah, right. Why get MS GifAnimator from MSFT or from some other link, when
instead we can have this "opportunity" to become a "customer" of this IDP?

There's an old, freeware edition of Ulead GIF Animator available from the
Pricelessware site:

http://www.pricelessware.org/thelist/web.htm#Graphics: GIF Animation

I usually use Microsoft GIF Animator, which is simple but serviceable:

UnFREEz 2.1 can do what you want.
Just drag and drop gifs, set the frame delay and press the create button.
simple and effective.

| UnFREEz is a high-speed Windows application that will take any number
| of images, saved as separate GIF files, and create a single animated
| GIF from those images. What makes this program unique from its
| competitors? First and foremost, UnFREEz is freeware, which means you
| may use it forever without paying a cent or feeling the slightest bit
| guilty. Secondly, UnFREEz is incredibly tiny, meaning you don't
| have to spend forever downloading an extremely bloated piece of
| software. Finally, it is so easy to use. Just drag and drop some GIF
| files from Explorer, set the frame delay time, and hit Make Animated
| GIF. UnFREEz will take care of the rest, including automatic
| interlacing and transparency detection. So download UnFREEz now and
| try it out for yourself! If you like it, keep it; it's free! This
| program is written in non-MFC Win32 C++, and should not need any
| additional files to run.

After reading that description, it's not longer even an essential criterion
whether I need the function that the program performs; how can I resist any
program with such fine character?

You can't. I hardly ever use it, but refuse to let it go. It's pro after
pro after pro. I found myself creating animated gifs using the Gadwin
Printscreen/UnFREEz combo to mail my dad small tutorials on how to use OE
in the beginning.
Now UnFREEz just sits there on my hd, warm and cosy in it's own place, not
waiting, but ready to be unleashed.

Bateau ....

The Embellish image editor includes
a very usable GIF animator ....

Embellish has been on previous PricelessWare Lists
but I'm not sure of its current PL status ....

Is there a way of changing the transition effect? Fading the images in & out
for example?

I've just noticed, in the recent "SOS uploads whatznu" post, that he
picked up Unfreez for his site.

That reminds me of a search I once spent some days on, with basically
unsuccessful results. It was for screen-recorder-to-animated-gif program.
We have onscreen-activity-to-avi. In Wink, we have screen record to
onscreen-activity-to-Flash. (And out there, maybe a few heavy multimedia,
or ugly proprietary formats, too.) I could not find something similar
for rendering anim gif as end result. I cannot recall now, whether no
such program existed at all, or merely did not exist in freeware. I do
recall that it was a very exhaustive hunt, with at minimum no success
in the latter area.

Mainly the search was primarily to satisfy curiosity only. And I admit
I haven't thought the subject, the premise of the quest, through with any
depth.

My one simple thought on the subject, whether such a product as I sought
existed or note: To do things more attentively, in separate steps, I'm
sure that would turn out the best end product. I think I might try the
combination of products you mention, next time I un-laze enough to give
that kind of project a go...
Now UnFREEz just sits there on my hd, warm and cosy in it's own place, not
waiting, but ready to be unleashed.

That's how I like to have my apps. All quiet and warm. Not demanding, an
not insisting in permanent entries in my registry/sysdir, etc. And always
available, like good minute-men, ready to jump up and perform their tricks
when called.
