Freeware for 286 PC?

C

Chaos Master

Hello.

Do you know of any MS-DOS freeware that is known to run on a PC with a
286 processor? i.e. freeware that is compiled for 16-bit CPU.

The 286 is 16-bit processor, and it seems that most modern MS-DOS stuffs
are built to 32-bit processors (386, 486).

Why bother looking for software for a 286 computer? Just go down the
street on trash collection day and pick up the entire computer from
the curb LOL

I inadvertantly failed to mention in my first reply that you also
ought to try dump sites, landfills, and junk yards. All good sources
for the material you are looking for.

Seriously - check 'em out!
All my kit comes from the local refuse tip, and currently stands at:

PIII 900Mhz
20Gig hard drive
512k Pc133 Dram
Soundblaster Live Pci card
Matrox G450 dual head card
Pace external modem
APC 400 UPS
HP 1120c printer
HP4300C scanner
Philips 109 19" monitor

Nothing on the list cost more than a fiver.
I've a similar system at home, based round an AMD 1.4Ghz cpu for the
kids to muck about on.

When I find the time, I've also got an AMD 1.9Ghz system to set up (
not in any particular hurry, as the reason for using the 900Mhz cpu is
that it can be passively cooled - and thus makes a quiet machine ) any
number of UPS's as spares, ditto HP printers ( worth buying for the
half-full ink cartridges alone ), network gear by the bagload, scsi
raid caddies and drives - and a PIII 500Mhz box running a working
installation of W2000, on which I hacked the admin password using a
linux util:
http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm#1

I only bought the latter for its 10Gb hard drive, which will come in
handy for use as a backup drive in my removeable caddies ( which make
use of a batch file scripted with XXCopy ).

There is no excuse for your rancor and sarcasm. The poster has an old
computer that he likes to use, for whatever reason. I also have an old
Compaq 286 that I like to fire up from time to time. If you can't say
anything constructive, then say nothing at all.

But then again, take a look at your email addy. Guess that says it all.

check here:

btw: i still have a 286 that i use on rare occasions...
i got a memory expansion card and was able to put 16 megs of RAM in that
thing...
at the time a 286 was new, 16 megs of ram would have cost a fortune!

even with less ram...a 286 will run windows3.1 and most any windows3.1
application

After reading 3 of your posts today I suggest you take your own

I don't recall posting anything sarcastic or belittling towards anybody,

I confess to running an IBM PS/2 Model 30 286 from time to time, mostly
for Infocom games. I don't have any freeware for it, though.

Reminds me, though -- Infocom did release the first three Zork text
adventures as freeware upon a time, as a promotion for a more modern Zork
game. These versions can be downloaded here:
