Free screen reader?

Chaos Master

Hello.

I'm looking for a freeware "screen reader" program.

The main reason is to help me making software accessible to users that
have to use screen reader.

Any free screen readers?

If you are referring to a true screen reader, as would be used by a
blind person (for example) and which supports hardware/software speech
synthesis (as opposed to the less-evolved "text" or "clipboard" readers
often mentioned in this NG) then I must say, "none, that I know of",
although, I am sure that participants in a blind users' NG are better
qualified to know. At present, I use the demo version of "Window Eyes",
a commercial product (easily Googled), along with its included DEC32
software synthesis. I am sighted and use it as an intelligent text
reader and, except for having learned to use them, keep the spoken user
interface mute because I don't need to hear menus, dialog boxes, etc. It
works well and the included software speech sounds pretty good, is
pretty smart and basically configurable as far as rate, pitch,
punctuation, et cetera go. The major disadvantage to the demo is that it
must be restarted after thirty minutes, which is a minor inconvenience
for me but could be a more serious impediment to one who's
hard-of-seeing.

Have you tried 'Windows Braille'?
just because this brainchild can't *think doesn't mean he can't see!
It's for people who can't see.

Have you tried 'Windows Braille'?

I'm not blind, and I want to use the screen reader to help me making
applications friendly to screen readers.

Last I was involved in this sort of thing, the local blind association
had access to free/cheap developers licences for the products that they
used and recommended. Have you contacted you local group(s)?

Cheers,

No, as I don't know if there's a blind association in my city.

Just a suggestion - look in the telephone book.
