Freeware File Manager?

I agree-a customisable toolbar in a free file manager should be
standard, not a paid-for option.

The xplorer2_lite DOES allow toolbar customization - you can
add/remove/rearange the buttons at will. You can even put one custom
shortcut there. But for a greater level of customizing you do need to
upgrade to a PRO version.

Yes, xplorer2 lite DOES allow you to add/remove individual buttons on
the toolbar. You just right click on the toolbar and select customize.
FreeCommander lets you move entire toolbars around but has no cutomize
function.

Yes it does. Extras/Settins/View/Toolbar and then select or deselect
items and whole toolbars to your heart's content ;-)

Well I tried the option you said and it allows you to add or remove
entire toolbars but it is impossible to add or remove specific icons on
or off the toolbar.

Extra -- Settings -- Toolbar -- Uncheck icons you don't want.

I recommend freeCommander:

I found its zillions of icons on its various command bars busy, and
confusing. I do not like to learn mappings between pictures and functions
that are not obvious. I still do fine with explorer2 lite, with a few
tweaks by me that I find I can not easily mention in explorer2's forum,
for web reasons (unknown problems).

One is the ability to go to any directory by specifying just all or
part of its name. Then explorer2 either goes there or presents a
menu of directories like that - I click once - and it goes where
I want.

I would have loved to have some facilites where I could filter using
command line eg typed in a text box
*.xls etc
anything around?

explorer2 both lite and pro does exactly that, along with lots of other
ways to filter.

A tabbed explorer with colour (or color if you prefer)

The color filter configuration interface is found under menu
Tools/Configuration.../Colors.
You can state an unlimited number of wildcard patterns separated by ";"
(logically treated as OR) for each user-defined color; the number of
definable colors is limited to 32,767 ;)

But note that the color filter is currently implemented only in the BETA
version (available in the support forum:
http://www.trackerv3.com/forum/index.php).
