Freelancer periodic hangs

I just got Freelancer, and I am trying to play it, but it is
constantly doing something really annoying: about every 20 to 30
seconds no matter what screen I am on - rooms, cut-scenes, space, etc.
the game hangs for about 7 or 8 seconds. It won't accept any input or
even let me move the mouse pointer during that time. But after the 8
seconds it continues working correctly again(except in cutscenes the
sound keeps playing sometimes during the pause so it gets ahead of the
video)...but only for another 30 seconds and then it pauses again.

Changing the video performance levels seems to have no effect -
whether it is all the way up or all the way down the hang happens
pretty much the same. I also tried copying that audio codec that
seems to be the standard advice for "choppy" sound, but that had no
effect either, and anyway my problem seems different than that - the
sound works perfectly, it's the rest of the game that is choppy.

My machine is:
1.9 ghz Athlon XP
Onboard C-Media CMI8738/C3DX sound
Old scavenged Riva TNT 3D video with 16 meg of RAM (which is
supposedly within the minimum game requirements listed on the game
box)

I have installed DirectX 9.0b.

Any advice?

Right, well I think it might be the sound after all. Try
disabling all sound in options - if it is the sound then
try updating sound card drivers.
Hmmm, how much memory do u have (system memory not
graphics) if you don't have the minimun required memory
for the agme + 128mb then that might be it.
Hmmm, also try updating video card drivers, and remember
just becuase you installed directx9 that means you haev
it. Old graphics cards such as mine don't support
directx9, so you cant use it. If they say u need 16mb of
video memory, itz only a nice way of saying 32. Also,
mabye the graphics crad speed is very slow for the game,
in which case buying a new, or well at most 1 year old
graphcis card for about $350 ( $150 US) with at least
64mb memory might fix it, although try 2 do the above
first.

I think I managed to fix this myself:

I tested some other screen resolutions and I noticed that the problem
happened more frequently and severely the larger the resolution was.
So that made me think it maybe was my wimpy graphics card after all.
So I went into the Display Properties / Advanced / Troubleshoot and
moved the Hardware Acceleration slider one notch down from Full.

So far it is working perfectly now.
