Freelancer skips when sounds are played

N

Neil Page

Hello I have just installed freelancer and the game runs fine and
smooth apart from one problem, everytime a sound is played (e.g. when
someone appears on the screen to talk to you) the game "jumps" for a
second, then returns to normal. It is only at the beginning of the
sound being played that this happenens. I have tried various methods
to fix this annoying problem (including copying the l3codeca.acm &
l3codecp.acm files into the freelancer EXE folder and other freelancer
folders, turning the sound and graphics acceleration down and off,
turning the music off) but with no success. I know this is only a
minor problem but its spoiling an otherwise brilliant game and any
help would be greatly apprciated.
Oh and here is my system:

Epox 8RDA+ Mobo
Athlon xp2400 2Ghz
512Mb DDR Ram
Geforce 4 Ti4200 64Mb
Maxtor 7200Rpm 60gb HDD

Thanks

Paul.

Hi Neil,

You've already tried the meat of my solution. Here's more...

Copying the FL Codec to your FL directory sometimes solves that problem:

1. To download the l3codecp.acm codec click: http://tinyurl.com/7nta
or copy the l3codeca.acm codec from your windows system32 folder
to the Freelancer\EXE folder in step 2, and rename it to l3codecp.acm.

2. Save the codec to your Freelancer EXE directory. The path is:
Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE

3. Reboot

If you still have problems visit: http://tinyurl.com/76tf
or increase the Codec's Priority to 1 here's how:

a) Go into Control Panel / Sounds / Hardware Tab
b) Select Audio Codec from the list / click the Properties button
c) Click the Properties Tab / double-click Fraunhofer IIS Codec
d) Change priority to 1 / Click "Use this audio Codec"
e) Click Apply / Click OK to close all open windows and finish.

There are more sound tips in the readme.rtf file on your Freelancer CD.
That's all there is to it. Post back and let us know how that worked. :)

Hi Neil,

Okay, since you an nForce you might want to install their latest
drivers dated July 2003. Some of the improvements touch on
sound, for example:
a.. EAX fixes and compatibility improvements in
a.. Operation Flashpoint
b.. Neverwinter Nights
c.. The Matrix Reloaded
d.. Grand Theft Auto: ViceCity
e.. Mafia
f.. Battlefield 1942
a.. Updated audio control panel
a.. 3D audio performance improvements

The WHQL nForce driver can be downloaded from this page:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_2.45

Thaks jimmy, I downloaded the drivers as you suggested but it still
hasnt solved the problem :-( I am nw begining to wonder if this is
just a "bug" in the game that hasnt been fixed. Do you (or anyone else
for that matter) have the game jimmy, does it happen when you play
it?, I'll run through what happens again:
When a person appears to talk to you during the game (like when you
complete a mission for instance) the screen "jumps" or "skips" for
like half a second, then when another person appears, it doess it
again. This doesnt make the game unplayable, but it bugs the hell
outta me especially as I am playing it on a high spec system. So does
this happen when anybody else plays it?, is it a bug?

Thanks again Jimmy for your continued help.

I have it. Can't say I've seen that happen here though. Haven't had to
move files around in the folders either.

Hi Neil,

No I haven't been unfortunate enough to experience that
problem, except when I fiddled around with the sound
codecs and removed the ones I had copied into my FL
foler. That gave me some of the symptoms that I had
been reading about from you and others.

There seems to be a conflict with other codec packs
that some users install. I beleive DIV-X is one culprit.
My sound card isn't exceptional either, it's a standard
run of the mill SB Live!
