when trying to install abobe photoshop 4 on xp pro I get a
message that it cannot access the disk because it needs 3
mb free virtual memory. I have 1G of memory.

That is rather unusual but not a problem to fix if in fact
the application is reporting correctly. Virtual memory is
the same as pagefile and is found here go>start\control
panel\double click to open system\then click the advanced
tab and under performance click the settings button and
then the advanced tab and down the bottom you will see
virtual memory and click the change button if you want to
change your virtual memory. I suggest you try "system
managed size to begin". I have mine set to 150mb as a
start and 1500mb as a maximum. Keep smiling.

It's not really the program itself that is using so much memory, but the undo function. Working with large graphics files, applying filters, creating multiple layers with each step stored so it can be undone, it takes a lot of memory to store the information. Similar graphics programs (PaintShop Pro, for example) will also use huge amounts of memory for undo. That type of usage is better suited to write out to the pagefile since it may never be used, leaving RAM for more productive tasks.

That certainly makes sense. The ability to "go back" is pretty crucial.
