free up system resources

Hello, can someone help me?
I have AOl... And it had stopped responding every time I would log online here the last few days.. I wrote asked for help.. AOL got me to send a copy of system resources to them and they told me my prob is I dont have enough system resources free. I know I have enough free space, and memory. What am I suppose to have open when I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL ? I mean what is nessesary without shutting down important things? I do have nortons and Zone Alarm. I need those two also.
Here is a copy of my programs that are open:

this is 20 processes, but when I log On I have 33.
What can I do?
