Hi all,
I need a favor. I'm from New Orleans and cellphone and long distance
communication has become non-existent via Hurricane Katrina. Trying to
reach people via cell who are out of area is extremely problematic.

Text messaging does work though. Is there a web based site that offers
free unlimited text messaging? I'm trying to get land line numbers to
people so we can communicate.

Thank you all,

Chris

How about posting the info here along with the numbers you're trying to
contact and we can try to make contact for you and read your messages to
them. Good ole CB radio and relay's worked for the Alaska Pipeline - should
work here.

I have unlimited long distance calling as I'm sure plenty of others do and
would be willing to help out.

I did a quick search for any sites that were offering the free text
messaging service but didn't find any - yet.

Thank you for your kind reply. I'm really not comfortable posting the
cellphone numbers of close friends on the web. The problem is nobody
can get to them via normal calls. when a call is placed to a cell
phone in the 504/985 area code it must go there to be resolved and
relayed out even if the recipient is not in that area code locale.
Unfortunately there is no power and telephone service over much of the
greater New Orleans area and isn't expected to be for several weeks.

I'll just have to sign up for a pay service for the duration.

Thank you again,

chris

I just typed free sms into Google and got a load of hits but mobiles
don't work here at all so I dont' know much about it or what to look
for. There was a post here a month or more ago about a programme that
effectively gave you hundreds of free sms sending by bringing together
all the places that allow limited numbers a day.

Good Luck!

Maybee they have an economy plan for emergencies.....
I have been calling INTO the gulf area with SKYPE and
had no real problem talking to people there, sometimes I
must dial several times though. SKYPE-OUT is needed to dial to
telephones ,about 2 cents per minute. You deposit 10 EURO
to use .
