This is a way cool service, currently in test mode, totally free, US &
Canada only. I read about it in the latest Clif Notes Freeware
newsletter [highly recommended!], which you can find at:
http://freewarewiki.pbwiki.com/index.php?wiki=ClifsCurrentNewsletter
I thought it was so cool I wanted to post it as a separate topic.
Here's the description from the homesite:
http://ws.cdyne.com/NotifyWS/phonenotify.asmx?op=NotifyPhoneBasic
"This Method will call any phone number in the US/Canada and read the
TextToSay to that phone number.
Set VoiceID equal to 0 for TTS Diane to speak the Text. For a list of
Voices with their ID look at getVoices. PhoneNumberToDial and CallerID
must be filled in (They can be in any format as long as there is 10
digits). Use a LicenseKey of 0 for testing.
To test the operation using the HTTP POST protocol, click the 'Invoke'
button."
Note the "0" in the LicenseKey field for free testing. You can also
vary voices [male or female] by changing the value of the VoiceID.
I just tried this out and you get the voice message delivered to
land-line or cell phone within 15 sec- 1 minute. One thing: you have to
be sure the number you're calling and the Caller ID field have
different numbers.
As the Clif Notes site jokingly says, you can use this service to place
prank calls.
This would be useful for delivering anonymous messages to those you
don't want to actually have to talk to, calling in sick for school or
work [nothing beats a robotic "I'm sorry, this is Timmy's mom & he
won't be able to make it to school today," etc.
This is way cool! Wonder how long it'll be free?
One final thing -- at the end of your voice mail message, there's a
brief announcement to register/buy the full service, tho hardly
annoying for what you get for free.
Thanks again to Clif for pointing to this!
