free dvd screen grabber?

I don't want to pay $30 to upgrade my windvd player that came with my new
computer just to capture dvd stills. can anyone point me to or advise me in
a reliable source to download a freeware version, or at least an inexpensive
one? I've looked all over the web with no real luck.
