Free DivX to DVD converter?

H

Henk de Jong

Hi,
I'm really new in this DVD business, and I received a DivX movie from a
friend, but it appears that this doesn't work in my new DVD-player.
Another friend told me that I had to convert that movie to a DVD
format. Does someone know a freeware solution to do this? Please, a
rather easy to understand because I'm a newbie on those multimedia
things :))

With kind regards,

DivX is a movie, 'made from' dvd. So you can not play it on dvd players
except those with divx support. So you would need to get an original dvd or
make one from divx, but this would be complicated i guess (you need mpeg2
encoding for it- this is not divx)... or play the divx on pc with tv-out
option?

Regards, Nejc.

To convert to DVD you will need to convert the DivX (Mpeg-4) to Mpeg-2.
There are no high-quality freeware mpeg-2 encoders, unless you can find the
long-outdated Tmpgenc version 12a (the last freeware version w/unlimited
mpeg-2). At that point you can look here:

Hi,
I think I've found one. It's called XMPEG and is available for free
from http://www.xmpeg.net/. This thing says that it can convert various
video formats to DVD. I'll try this later today and keep you informed.

BBmpeg is freeware and will convert avi to MPEG-2 (dvd):

TMPGenc version 12a is (said to be) better and has unlimited MPEG-2
support. Unfortunately the link for it on www.dvdrhelp.com has gone.
Visit this site anyway for guides to convert divx to MPEG-2.

You can still download version 12.a from
http://members.aol.com/BlueShaft/SVCD/TMPGEnc.zip

No it doesn't; it says it can convert DVD to DivX. To do what you want to
do, I again urge you to look here:

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm

and find Tmpgenc version 12a (unless you want to buy the current version).
This guide helps you use a tool, DVD2SVCD, that bundles together and
automates several different freeware apps that it would take a long time to
learn to use one-at-a-time. (Despite its name DVD2SVCD can be used for
Divx-to-mpeg-2 conversion as well.)

Of course once you've got the DVD-compliant mpeg-2 file, you will still
need to author it to DVD, but I gather you've got a way to do that already.
I don't know of any freeware apps for that.

Hi,
Thanks for your message.

I already have TMPGenc version 12a. I downloaded it from
http://members.aol.com/BlueShaft/SVCD/TMPGEnc.zip.

XMPEG really converts various video-formats to DVD. I also was a little
sceptical, but gave it a try. And, believe it or not, it does work.
When XMPEG starts you'll see a wizard, where you can choose a source
DVD-file or any other video-file, and in one of the following steps it
asks you for the destination, where DVD is one of the options.

When this one stays freeware, maybe it can become a nominee for the
PL-list.

With kind regards,
