Free directories

Apologies in advance: this question isn't exactly FP related, but as the
purpose of FP is to create web sites, please bear with me.

I'm trying to find directories that accept free submissions. Apparently
Yahoo does (for non-commercial sites) and also Looksmart (through Zeal) and
also DMOZ (although don't know if all sites free or just non-commercial).
Does anyone know of any other general directories that accept free
submissions?

There are also a number of free topic specific directories but I haven't
found any relevant to me. If anyone knows of any specific directories which
would be appropriate for a site about France, French life and French
property, I would welcome the information.

Google isn't a directory. The Google directory is a feed from DMOZ. Good
luck getting your site listed there -- the wait time is semi-officially
described as "anywhere from a couple of hours to infinity".

I have found that my site is listed in Google and I didn't do anything
special. I put in a meta description and keywords tag with a few words in
each, but that was all.

The title is "Trevor and Carole's Home Page" and a search on Trevor and
Carole (or Trevor+Carole) returns it as #6, with a reference to a frame page
at #7

Do I have something unusual about my site?

Is it related to the amount of updating, because I update every few days as
I refine the site ?

Trevor, I didn't say it was difficult to get listed in the Google
database (i.e., the index that feeds search results). I was talking
about the Google Directory which is separate and is derived from a DMOZ
feed. You cannot submit directly to the Google Directory -- you can only
submit to DMOZ which is largely a waste of time.

Do a Google search for Google Directory and you'll see what I mean.
