Free antivirus software recomendation

I'm not going to renew my current antivirus subcriptions. Is AVG Free Edition
still good enough to use? when using the software does user need to sign-up?

Use Avira antivir or avast,
AVG free doesn't include rootkit protection and i have found rootkits very
common nd sometimes harder to fix than other malware.

either way paying for protection is over rated

i use Avira/Antivir free edition on my home box for years and didn't
been infected so far
