Free Anti Virus Protection Download

I was told, by a self-proclaimed, knowledgeable relative, that MSN has free
anti-virus protection that you can download...and she has used it for years!?
I had Norton already on my computer when I purchased it, and then it was
going to run out..so went with MSN protection, using Mcafee..then i was
informed that the subscription was going to run out July 4th, of this year(I
bought the computer, at Staples, in April of this year).
I then proceeded to download the WindowsLive OneCare virus protection...but
with the 90 day trial. Now my computer says that this is out of date. I
need help here..with finding a free or low cost Virus Protection for my
computer.
Any help would be nice...my computer says the virus protection for security
is at risk. I have Firewall and Windows Defender.
thank you for any help i can get.

Hello clairebea,

There are a couple of interesting posts in this groups which may relate to
your question – about antivirus.
To view these posts type AVAST in the `Search for` box, select
the appropriate Newsgroup from the drop down menu and select Go.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Good luck

If you are still around...

You probably should think about removing both Norton and McAfee since
parts of them could still be active in an effort to advertise the option
to renew the subscription. You may need to stop any activity and reboot
before uninstalling them so visit their websites and look for uninstall
instructions.

You've gotten some good information regarding removing all traces of Norton and
McAfee from your system, as well as god information on free alternatives for
antivirus. Note that if you are still an MSN subscriber, you are eligible for
the McAfee subscription. It should have renewed along with your MSN
subscription.
Should you choose to proceed using Windows Live OneCare, which is a subscription
based service, this forum post contains steps to help troubleshooting update
problems -

However, starting with the complete removal of your previous antivirus programs
would be the right thing to do as I suspect that one of them is actually the
cause of the problem, perhaps Norton Live Update is still hanging around.

hi Spirit. i am going to look up these companies...never heard of
them....but then again, why would I if I am just starting out. Why the
change from AVG to AVAST? thanks for your reply. I can use all the 'tech
support" I can get. lol

hi...thanks for your response....I have a friend who has an issue with
Mcafee....she said that it downloads stuff that she never authorized., and it
got rid of some of her files...she was not too happy with the program. I
didn'n have any problems that i was aware of. About the subscription with
Mcafee before ...I downloaded it into my computer...i did not have it
transferred with my ISP... I am going to look into the different responses i
got from everyone....this is really nice that everyone watches out for one
another. thank you!

Avast has a better interface, updates more often, and seems to have
a better detection ratio.

they had updated the antivirus...as it was outdated..../out of date. by the
way...my sister in law said that the Mcafee is free with MSN to download. I
am leary of them now...i have heard alot about them...oh well...the OneCare
is good till the 90 day trial is up ..so...thanks for your help...and i wll
keep coming in for a visit once in awhile.
take care,

In my experience Avast! worked better with WinMail than AVG.
