FP2003/WinXP Pro: Publish.... Merge Nav structure?

T

Trish

I did a 'publish' from FrontPage on my PC using the File
publish selection. I set it to 'All' pages. The publish
completed, I closed FP on my PC and Opened my
web site using IE6. My online web shows pages off the
Home Page that are NOT off the Home page on my
PC source. I checked the Publish log on my PC and
saw the 1st item: Wednesday, December 01, 2004
11:18:14 AM User confirmed merge of navigation
structure. The last item in the Publish Log report
shows: Wednesday, December 01, 2004 11:40:01 AM
Merged navigation structure.
I talked to my Server support guy and he took a back
up of our online web before I tried the 'publish all'. He
should be able to restore the old one that I just wiped
out with my 'publish all'.
I have had no problems with publishing until a week ago
when I tried to publish some updates and got several
pages of items listed as 'Conflicts' (see my prior post
in this newsgroup).
What does 'merge navigation structure' actually do (how
could it merge navigation structure if there was nothing
out on my Server for it to merge with) ? I'm confused.
When would you use it and when should you not use this
'merge' feature? I did find the 'merge' button on the
frontpage 'publish' page and it was tagged.
Any help would be appreciated.

Never select Merge Navigation, always select Replace or do not replace, and also unless you delete
the live site first, you should have chosen Publish Change Pages only.

Tom,
I was trying to follow the feedback I received from my prior post
on 11/29/04 "FP2003/WinXP...
I've been doing the 'publish' function for several months and never
noticed the 'merge navigation structure' item was tagged on the
FrontPage screen. I did the 'publish all' as suggested (I did not
untag the 'merge navigation' item). Before doing the publish
changed pages only suggested feedback, I checked my online
web in IE6. My Home Page has navigation items showing in
the left hand navigation column that are not there on my PC
source web. On my PC they are showing where they belong...
... under the School page.
Do I now go ahead and do the suggested 'publish changed pages
only' with the merge navigation item unflagged? I'm getting
more and more confused.
Please help?

You need to make sure you local copy is correct, then you need to open the live/remote site in FP
and delete all content, accept for the images and _private folder, for these, just delete any
content within them, then publish and leave Change Pages Only selected.

The live site was deleted before I did a 'publish all pages'. I'll
try another 'publish all pages' without the 'merge navigation'
and see if that works. The server admin does have a backup
of the original good web.
I sure wish I knew how I got into this mess in the 1st place,
so I don't get into it again, if I ever get out of it now.

My local copy is correct. The 'navigation' errors showing in my
online web since I did the 'publish all pages' are not showing in my
local web. I've checked all the views/navigation structure/and hyper-
links on my local web -- no errors. I can't delete all content on the
remote web, the Server Admin does that. I'll try this again with
'publish all pages' and with the 'merge navigation structure'
untagged. Thank you for trying to help me.

Now I can't find where the 'merge navigation structure' is set?
I did another 'publish all pages' after the server admin told me
it was ready, and it merged the navigation structure again.
I tried the online FP help but it doesn't tell me where this
option can be turned off or on. I know it came up as an
item in one of the popup screens but I can't find the
screen again. Can you help? I'm still looking.
