FP2003 disk-based web on flash-drive

Dan E

Does anyone know if FP2003 can handle having a web published to a
flash-drive on one computer where it's G:, then take the flash drive to
another computer where by default it's some other drive letter (E:, say)? I
know that FP in publishing takes into account the URL of the target web. Is
the best way to handle this situation simply to rename the flash drive
letter so that it's the same path on each computer?

TIA,

As long as all of your images / files etc, are contained within the web, you can publish
it to a Folder on any drive.
The drive letter is not an issue, since the "root" of the web is it's containing folder.

Thanks, Steve. Thinking in terms of portability, I've come across Web Drive
(not a freebie) which maps servers to a drive letter, basically using FTP,
WebDAV or SFTP. Sounds OK - wondered if there's something out there that
does the same job but is freeware. Have you come across anything like that?

Thanks again,

Dan

You can easily open it as a discbased web no matter the drive letter.
A Web uses relative paths so the driveletter doesn't matter.

Well, in a sense, FTP always considers a server as a drive.

Have you ever your website by clicking the link in My Network Places by right clicking the
link and selecting "Explore" ??( requires user name and password )

Or simply open your site in IE, using ftp://yoursite.com and then click File > Log in
as...

Yes - I guess I'm looking for something that would transform FTP from being
slow and clunky into something as convenient as Windows Explorer. For some
reason on my PC (XP Pro SP2), My Network Places loses the plot pretty
consistently - all instances of Explorer shut down, the screen goes to
background for a few seconds, then starts to re-populate itself - but
without the Explorer instances. So I've got out of the habit of trusting
that (convenient) way of moving files that don't need to be published to and
fro between local PC and remote host.

Thanks anyway, Steve.

If the live/remote server has the FP extensions, you should always publish via FP to maintain your
site's structure, not FTP.

If working with a disk-based web, you should always publish as well, as this will maintain the
structure of your web site.
