FP2000 cannot load fp4autl.dll error - SR1a update does not resolv

hi,
Have just bought a new Pc - windows XP Media Centre version 2002 SP2

When i try to install Front page 2000 (Stand Alone version Not bought with
office)

I get - Cannot Load "\fp4autl.dll"

I have found the microsoft help paper Q237426 and installed the sr1a update
as advised but still get the same error - Cannot Load "\fp4autl.dll"

have also tried office sr2 and sr3 updates

As other threads have suggested i have custom reinstalled with no front page
extensions and this also makes no difference - ( Windows detects this anyway
in custom install and doesn't select the 2 frontpage server ext modules)

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated as i am slowly losing my mind.

Thanks in advance

Scott

hi Steve thanks for replying,

Have now installed IIS in windows setup

Reinstalled FP2000 ( custom install and adding server ext modules)

Intalled front page server extensions ( From Cd rom manually, should i do
this ? )

applied the SR1A update

But i still get the same error - Cannot Load "\fp4autl.dll" at every stage.

Hope i am not being some kind of dummy, have installed frontpage on another
pc with XP and had no problems - and didnt even need the sr1a patch. very
confused.

Any more ideas would be much appreciated

Cheers scott :(

thanks steve,

there doesn't seem to be a check box for personal web server in the custom
install of frontpage 2000, am i missing something?

have removed the fromtpage extensions and frontpage and reinstalled fp 2000
with server extensions resource kit and server extensions admin forms crossed
but still recieve the same error Cannot Load "\fp4autl.dll" (windows actually
crosses these anyway in the custom install)

i only want to use frontpage for disk based webs and publishing to my
easyspace server - not as a Pc web server anyway but can't seem to get away
from this error

Thanks for your help but am still struggling

Anymore ideas would be great

yes the file fp4autl.dll file exists in C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\40\BIN

I thought this file may be corrupt and have replaced it with the file found
in C:\WINDOWS\I386\FP40EXT.CAB as instructed in microsoft support papers but
still get the same error.

I also tried to rename the file i.e. fp4autlrename.dll so i could repair my
frontpage installation or reinstall it as suggested at microsoft support. but
everytime i rename it a new file is created called fp4autl.dll with in a
matter of seconds.

thanks again

I'm experiencing same problem trying to install front page 2000 on win xp. I
wonder if there are different versions of this file. Mine is 4.0.2.7523.

Wehay i have finally solved it, Steve was right all along and i was beind a
real dumbass. Just reinstalled windows and everything as well for no reason.

The problem for me was in IIS when i installed it i didnt actually look in
the details section and check frontpage extensions.

for you Gerri - i would as Steve advised goto

Control Panel > Add / Remove programs > Add /Remove Windows Components

and check ISS then click details and check the fronpage server extensions as
well.

after installing ISS (with extensions checked in details (i missed this
first time doh!!))

My frontpage works fine,

have actually just got frontpage installed from its custom install with no
extra boxes checked just the frontpage selection. and not the sr1-a or any
other updates applied to it.

I assume the updates will work as well , but hey if it aint broken don't fix
it.

Would like to say thank you very much to Steve for all his help, this
finally ends 5 days of stress for me thank God. If you were here i would buy
you 100 beers.

Cheers Again Steve

Glad to hear of your success with Front Page 2000 and thanks for sharing your
solution. Unfortunately I'm running XP Home so IIS not available to me
Though I have read of ways to run IIS on XP Home
edition(http://adamv.com/dev/articles/iis-on-xp-home) I'm not brave enough to
try it having just got this new computer working the way I want I think I
will continue to run Front Page on my old one under Win 98
Once more thanks to all who have helped with this problem

Correct. I ran MS PWS 4.0 (which was available as a separate download from
the NT4 Option Pack ) with FP 2000.
