FP and XP Pro?

Hi all,

I've just installed XP Pro on a brand new PC, and XP Pro added a folder to
Program Files called "microsoft frontpage". There are no files in the folder
or its subfolder "version3.0", but XP won't let me delete them. I've checked
the Folder options and set it to not hide any files, but there are still
none in there. XP shows a sharing violation error, but how can that be,
since there are no files.

Anyone know what's up with this? Why does XP install the FP folder in the
first place, and why can't I delete it? I want to install FP later, but I
really want to keep everything clean and organized, which is nearly
impossible the way the FP install package runs, it puts files all over the
place.

Thanks,

Larry123

Larry,

I really have no idea why that folder is there. I'm using XP Pro as well.
My directory contains a "bin" folder which has these files in it:
fp98sadm.exe
fp98swin.exe
fpsrvadm.exe
fpsrvwin.exe

I'm thinking it may be legacy stuff. My advice is to ignore it. When you
install FrontPage, it won't install here rather to Microsoft Office (by
default) along with the rest of the other apps.

Although it says FrontPage its not, it's basically just part of the
FrontPage Server Extensions technology that was used to create the ability
for the My Networks Places items. You can't remove it as it's part of the
OS.

Hope this helps,

Checked my XP and I also have . . .

fp98sadm.exe
fp98swin.exe
fpsrvadm.exe
fpsrvwin.exe

. . .in the bin directory. Upon close examination, it appears these files
are for the installation and administration of Front Page 98 server
extensions. Front Page will install it's own and certainly be newer.

Thanks Mark,

OT: This kind of stuff from MS drives me nuts. :) There are no files in
the folder, so why does the OS still "need" the empty folders? If it's all
part of the OS, call it what it is and put it where it belongs, in the
Windows folder. I'm trying to keep the Program Files folders organized and
under control, and MS makes that virtually impossible.

OK, out of gripe mode now.

Happy Holidays all.

The folders are not empty - they contain hidden system files of known type
(which you probably have not turned on for viewing in Windows Explorer)

The folders are definitely empty, my Windows Explorer folder options are
set to display everyting and hide nothing.

(I have not yet installed FP on this box.)
