FP 98 to FP 03 upgrade woes

MIchael Corbett

Hi all....

I have just recently purchased a Win XP Home Version Computer. I webmaster
a church website using FP 98 on a Win 98 Computer. I went to install Front
Page on my new computer starting from the beginning. I made the changes in
the Windows "HOSTS" file to accept "thetalisman 127.0.0.1" as my local host
for FP.

Then, I installed FP 97.... everything went well. I logged on to our ISP
and downloaded the church website into FP 97 using the local address
http://thetalisman/bernardlocal. Next, I tried to install the PWS from the
Win 98 CD... Well, Win XP didn't like that and I couldn't install PWS. I
figured that was a WIN XP thing.

So... I installed the FP 98 upgrade ..... Everything went well...
http://thetalisman/bernardlocal was good and I could publish to the church
web site and I could publish from the live website into my local machine.

Then, I installed the FP 03 upgrade..... oops! The upgrade went OK....
not a hitch... until I tried to access the local web site. FP 03 doesn't
seem to recognize http://thetalisman/bernardlocal as valid. I can go live
and open the church website on the internet... but I can't publish down to
my local machine at http://thetalisman/bernardlocal. I keep getting the
message that... " http://thetalisman/bernardlocal is not a valid address" OR
I get... "there is no server on port 80."

I have tried all the Help files in FP 03 .... ( I know... silly of me ...
but I tried anyway) I think I have read every message in this news group
( very impressive .. BTW) I am at a loss... What am I missing??? ... is
there some place that I can go to learn what I did wrong during the
upgrading process.??? Is there something that I need to download???

I really would appreciate any help...

Thanks for your time reading this request...
Cordially,
Michael Corbett

I'm not the best person to answer this question by any stretch of the
imagination but I wonder if it's because you have XP Home and not XP Pro.

PWS is not supported by Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Unfortunately however,
I made the unintentional mistake of installing it ( with FP98 ) on a Windows
2000 Pro machine. Also the Home versions of 2K or XP won't support PWS or
IIS. It just doesn't work.

So, what I would do is uninstall all the way back to the point where there
is no FrontPage on the machine. None....nada.

Reboot.

Remove the entry in the HOSTS file.

Then go here: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm and download and run
the utility named RegSeeker and have it clean the registry. It is going to
find a lot, and I mean a lot, of invalid entries. Let it do it's job, click
"Select all" and then right click in the window and click Delete. ( make
sure the backup box is checked )

Reboot

Then install FP 97 or 98 but select Custom install and *do not* let it
install PWS.

Then Upgrade to 2003.

There is no need to install any of the prior versions, but if you do, then install FP98.
