"Found new hardware wizard" not searching C:\WINDOWS\INF

Hello all,

I have a Sony VAIO runing Windows XP Media center. If I plug a flash
drive into the USB port, I get the "Found new hardware wizard" screen. When
I allow the wizard to Automatically install the driver, it ends with the
"unable to install" message. However, if I do not allow it to install
automatically, and point the wizard to C:\WINDOWS\INF, the device setups
fine. I have to do this for every usb device connect to the system. Once
I've gone through the setup for a give flash drive, the device seems to work
from then on. I have tried a couple of SCANDISK drives as well as a Lexar
drive. A

I thought Windows always looked in \WINDOWS\INF during an automatic
install - would anyone be able to confirm this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated ...
