forwarding messages to external email address

Using Outlook2003 connected to Exchange2000 and on my
personal mailbox, I have created a rule for email
messages meeting a certain condition to be forwarded to
an external email address (one that is not within our
domain). While I can create the rule just fine, the
actual forward does not take place. Relay is disabled on
the Exchange server. Any ideas or work arounds?

By default automatic forwarding is disabled on the Exchange server (secure
default). Contact your admin to verify whether this is still disabled.

Thanks for the feedback. Would automatic forwarding
disabled for any security reasons?

There is the possibility of a message looping if this option is turned on.
This was more of an issue in Exchange 5.5 because there was no separation of
auto-replies and auto-forwards. Auto-replies had to be enabled for
auto-forwards to work. If an auto-reply was sent to an undeliverable
address, the returned NDR (or even a read receipt) could trigger a mail
loop.

Exchange 2000 allows for setting one or the other or both on/off. Your admin
can enable auto-forwarding without enabling auto-replies.

Talk to your Exchange admin about enabling outbound forwarding.
